New Sculpture being installed in Peaceful Valley

Artist Sarah Thompson Moore will be installing a new sculpture in Peaceful Valley this week. The sculpture entitled, 'Convergence,' is a stylized fishing weir created of steel and rock. It celebrates fishing technologies invented and utilized by the region's Native peoples for thousands of years and serves as a tangible illustration of their relationship with the Spokane River and its salmon. Visitors can walk through and around the installation. Tapered, elegant forms alternate direction and are visually interesting from all vantage points, casting shadows that change throughout the day.

The piece was commissioned by the City of Spokane and Spokane Arts, in partnership with the Spokane Tribe. The work of art for the South Gorge Loop Trail represents the significance of the Spokane Tribe site and community as traditional fishing grounds. The site for the sculpture is near the south end of the Sandifur Bridge in Peaceful Valley. The artist began working on-site to install the work yesterday and with work ongoing until completion.

The land the sculpture will be located on is part of the Spokane Tribes aboriginal homeland.
