Historic Flight Foundation Museum reopens, plans tribute flight September 7

The Historic Flight Foundation has just reopened to the public this week. Trained docents will accompany patrons through the museum, explaining the histories of its airworthy vintage aircraft and the remarkable people who flew them. CDC rules will be followed. HFF masks will be available for sale or patrons can bring their own.

The museum has new exhibits and a member library. Noteworthy additions include one of only ten surviving F8F Grumman Bearcats, the first fighter used by the Blue Angels in performances. Its 'bent wings' allow below-deck storage in aircraft carriers and a tidy display in HFF next to the P-51 Mustang and Supermarine Spitfire. A Phaeton Cadillac used by FDR joins the Glacier Park Jammer for the classic car enthusiasts. Memberships can be purchased including rides in planes ranging from the Boeing Stearman biplane to the B-25D Mitchell bomber.

To celebrate reopening and to honor medical workers and first responders, a tribute flight will stage at HFF on the morning of Monday, September 7, Labor Day. Beginning at noon, a parade of planes will take off and overfly at 1,000 feet, significant medical and public safety facilities in the greater Spokane area. The point is to bring joy to observers on the ground without the risks of close contact, such as at an air show.

Christmas Tree Elegance 2020 to be held in River Park Square

Spokane Symphony Associates (SSA) has announced that River Park Square will host Christmas Tree Elegance 2020 on December 1-13. The event raised more than $400,000 for the Spokane Symphony last year with $1 raffle tickets and extraordinary tree displays and prizes. Because River Park Square best meets the COVID-19 social distancing requirements, no trees with raffle tickets and prizes will be displayed at the Historic Davenport Hotel this year. The trees will be on display on the 2nd floor.

SSA which produces Christmas Tree Elegance, plans to return to the Davenport Hotel in 2021 with a portion of the event. Donations are still being sought to support this great event. Gifts of any size can be made on the Spokane Symphony Associates website: spokanesymphonyassoc.org/become-a-sponsor.
