Magical, mirthful Mel McCuddin is at the Art Spirit Gallery this month

This Friday, October 12 the Art Spirit Gallery at 415 Sherman in downtown Coeur d'Alene opens their annual Mel McCuddin show with 66 new works by one of the region's favorite artists. There's an artist reception from 5-8pm, and the show runs through November 10.

Mel McCuddin was born in Spokane in 1933. He studied at EWU, Fort Wright College and Spokane Arts Center (an extension of WSU). He begins a painting with no idea in mind and when he begins painting and idea suggests itself. He paints directly on the canvas with no preliminary drawing or outline. The paint is poured, dripped, rubbed or wiped, and he uses his fingers and rags as much as brushes. And the result is amazing.

Mel says his justification for this year's work is that he's trying to put something worthwhile into the world and to make paintings that cannot be forgotten. When you see his paintings, you'll agree...mission accomplished!

Go to theartspiritgallery.com for more information and to view the show online. But really, do come and see Mel McCuddin's work in person!

Modern Masters: Group f/64 photography exhibition at the MAC

The MAC presents 'Modern Masters: Group f.64' featuring nearly 50 photographic images representing five of the most important photographers in the world: Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham, Willard Van Dyke, Brett Weston, and Edward Weston. The exhibition runs through February 3, 2019.

Founded in 1932, Group f.64 was an informal association of Bay Area photographers devoted to exhibiting and promoting a new direction in photography. Led by Ansel Adams and Edward Weston, the group was established as a challenge to pictorialism, a popular movement on the West Coast, which favored painterly, hand-manipulated, soft-focus prints. This small association of innovators named their organization Group f.64 after the large-format camera aperture, which produces the maximum depth of field so that everything from the immediate foreground to the distant background is in sharp focus, yielding crisp, graphic compositions.
