Coeur d'Alene Park celebrates 125 years with intersection art

The first celebration event for Coeur d'Alene Park's 125th Anniversary, Art for the Park, will be held Saturday, May 21 from 8 am to 5 pm. Four teams of people, each led by a paid professional artist who has created a design, will paint large-scale art on the street in four intersections around Coeur d'Alene Park - the intersection of 2nd and Spruce, 2nd and Chestnut, 4th and Chestnut and 3rd and Spruce. The celebration is sponsored by the Friends of Coeur d'Alene Park.

The artists who will create their designs are Erin Mielcarek, Tiffany Patterson, Ellen Picken and Tom Quinn. Volunteers for the artist teams will include students from local high schools and community colleges, as well as people of all ages from the general community. The art creation will be open to the public as a day of interaction and activity within the park. Children from the Southwest Community Center will help direct children's art activities on the tennis courts - creating their own Art for the Park.

Throughout the day of the event and then during ArtFest, June 3-5, people will vote on the art they like best by placing money in boxes manned by volunteers at each intersection. The donations will be used toward improvements to the park. The artist whose intersection art accrues the most 'dollar votes' will receive a 'People's Choice' cash award at the end of ArtFest.

The celebration will continue throughout the summer as it coincides with the 20th anniversary of the Coeur d'Alene Park Summer Concert Series sponsored by the Browne's Addition Neighborhood Council. It will culminate with Parkfest on September 10.
