Are you ready for some Hank Williams Jr.?

Good seats are still available for country music icon Hank Williams Jr. as he brings his blend of traditional country, blues and Southern Rock to kick off Northern Quest Resort & Casino's 5th Annual Pepsi Outdoor Summer Concert lineup this Friday, July 10 at 7:30pm.

In Hank Williams Jr.'s long and successful career, he has enjoyed more than 40 Top Ten singles with ten No. 1 hits, including country favorites 'All My Rowdy Friends,' 'Honkey Tonkin,' 'Ain't Misbehavin,' 'Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound' and 'Dixie on My Mind.' In 1987, Williams Jr. won his first of five country music entertainer of the year awards. His 'Born to Boogie' album won the Country Music Awards Album of the Year in 1988. Williams Jr.'s star power rose far beyond the country world when he reworked 'All My Rowdy Friends' into a theme song for Monday Night Football. Two years later, the Monday Night theme song won the first of four straight Emmy Awards. Williams, Jr. became the singing voice of Monday Night Football for 22 years. Opening for Hank Williams Jr. is local country music artist Chance McKinney from Seattle.

The Spokane Renaissance Faire has a new home

The Spokane Renaissance Faire will take place this year at The Lazy K Ranch in Colbert, the first weekend of October (3rd and 4th.) Lazy K Ranch is a wheat field just off of Highway 2 that will be transformed into a renaissance marketplace. With new structures and fun new features, this year's faire will look the part. Patrons will be transported to a time of revelry, chivalry, and craftsmanship.

The setting is the year 1545, and by order of Good King Henry VIII, the Duchess of Southampton, Elizabeth Cromwell hosts this year's Tournament of the Golden Apple. An International Court of Nobles from all over Europe will vie for the coveted Golden Apple trophy. Nobility will compete in various events such as sword fighting, archery, bocce ball, dancing and of course jousting.

The Spokane Entertainers Guild is a non-profit whose mission is to raise money for other local non-profits. The Spokane Renaissance Faire is the main fundraising event hosted by SEG and is staffed by an all volunteer team. Individuals interested in joining the team can contact seginfo@spokaneentertainersguild.org.

The annual fundraising recipient from the faire is 2nd Harvest Food Bank, so not only will patrons have a great time, but they will be helping to raise money and food. To date, SEG has raised over $3000 and 1000 pounds of food. With the new location, SEG hopes to double that number.

Arts Commission begins search for Poet Laureate

The Spokane Arts Commission, on behalf of the greater Spokane region, seeks nominations for the position of Spokane Poet Laureate. The person selected will join the Arts Commission in promoting and supporting an appreciation of literary arts throughout the greater Spokane community.

The purpose of the Poet Laureate will be to articulate what it's like to be a part of Spokane, to reflect on our people and the essence of life in the greater Spokane region. The person selected will help us come together as a community to express ourselves and share our vitality and unique qualities with the world outside Eastern Washington.

As both a local resident and a distinguished poet, the Poet Laureate will represent and celebrate the rich literary history and the diversity of Eastern Washington. As a spokesperson for the area's literary community, the Poet Laureate will help reinforce the role of literature in civic life and will actively participate in ceremonial, educational and cultural activities in the community at various times throughout his or her term of service.

The Poet Laureate for Spokane is an honorary position. The individual selected will serve a two-year term beginning in October 2015, and will receive a $2,000 stipend which will be delivered in two payments, one per year in the amount of $1,000 each. $500 of this stipend is indicated for materials.

Each applicant must be a resident of the greater Spokane community, and already be an established poet. Submit a resume and 4-6 poems, not exceeding 10 pages in total to spokanearts.submittable.com/submit.

Nominations will only be accepted July 6 through August 20.

'Cultural Experience' Defines Summer Season for CdA Tribe

The air is warm, the sky its bluest blue. Since time immemorial, summer is the season for gatherings and greetings of both old friends and new. This Cultural Experience comes to the Coeur d'Alene Casino Resort in a celebration of SummerDance, drums, songs and sharing tribal wealth.

Cultural Experience is open to all, held in the Chinook Meadow at the resort where shade and green grass will offer a comfortable setting. Doors open at 6pm with festivities beginning at 7pm. Attendees will receive a gift of huckleberry jam.

The event will open with a rider on horseback, entering to the sound of a flute and a welcoming narration from Cultural Affairs Director Quanah Matheson. The story of the dance will come, and of the significance of the drum. But the dances, many of them older than memory, will include a new twist, and possibly the birth of a new tradition.
