Transport your Soul in Spokane Symphony's Mozart and Strauss this weekend

This weekend, Saturday at 8 pm and Sunday at 3pm, the Spokane Symphony will transport your soul with masterpieces by Mozart, Poulenc and Strauss, in a concert of music inspired by faith. The Symphony Chorale will join internationally acclaimed soprano Martha Guth to sing "Stabat Mater."

Additionally, the 140 musicians will perform Mozart's Ave Verum, often described as the most perfect 46 measures in all Western music, creating a truly sublime experience.

As if that wasn't enough, the orchestra will treat concertgoers to the moods and dynamics of Strauss' massive tone poem Death and Transfiguration. Its soul-stirring climaxes culminate in the transfiguration that is beyond gorgeous and makes this work unforgettable.

Award-winning wines at the Arbor Crest Case Sale, Oct. 27-Nov. 11

Wine reviewers agree: Based on points and medals recently awarded to Arbor Crest Wine Cellars by Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast and several Seattle Wine & Food expos, the varietals crafted by Arbor Crest winemaker Kristina Mielke van Loben Sels are outstanding.

Arbor Crest Wine Cellars' 2011 Merlot and 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon earned gold medals from judges at the Seattle Wine & Food Experience this summer. Recent accolades from Wine Spectator include 93 points for their 2011 Dionysus and 90 points for the 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon. Two varietals of 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon and a 2012 Merlot received 91 points or more from Wine Enthusiast.

But points can be beside the point. A high point rating doesn't guarantee you will like a particular varietal (only your individual palate can do that). So what do points tell you when it comes to selecting a wine? A rating of 90 or better simply confirms that the wine is "an outstanding example" of what reviewers look for in that varietal. And when a winery has a multi-year record of creating "outstanding examples," it's a safe bet that the winemaker's exemplary style can be tasted throughout their portfolio of wines.

Because of the costs related to getting wines under those judge-y noses, many excellent bottles go unrated. But when a winery such as Arbor Crest has earned several awards even the unrated varietals on their list are likely to be excellent.

The main point here: It's time to enjoy big savings on over two dozen outstanding varieties of Arbor Crest wines at their Annual Case Sale! Build your own case (or cases) with any 12 bottles, whether they are official award-winners or your own personal flavor of house wine.

To get in on the sale (happening Mon., Oct. 27 - Tues., Nov. 22), visit the Arbor Crest Tasting Rooms at the Cliff House Estate in Spokane Valley or on the 3rd floor of River Park Square in downtown. To order by phone, visit arborcrest.com for the list of Case Sale wines and prices (the list goes up this Friday, Oct. 24, and phone orders begin Monday) Quantities are limited, order early in the sale for best selection.
