Collegiate Cross Country Regionals and Nationals come to Spokane

Memorable courses and a long commitment to running have scored Spokane two 2013 NCAA cross country events. Check out West Region's best Division II distance runners competing this Saturday, November 9, on the scenic Plante's Ferry Sports Complex. Rain, shine or snow, 24 men's teams and 27 women's teams will be grinding out their best performances, hoping for a return trip to Spokane for the National Championships in late November. More than 370 athletes will be coming from as far away as Hawaii and Alaska to compete in Regionals.

A snow covered course and a high of 23 degrees made for an epic race in 2011 when Spokane last hosted the DII National Championships. Many of the athletes had never seen snow and walked away calling Spokane their favorite city to compete. This year, a new group of runners will be competing for the national title on November 23. The same sentiments are expected this year, no matter the weather.

Entrance for spectators to Regionals is free. $5 will be charged at the gate for the Championship event.

'What is Art?' opens at GU's Jundt Art Museum Nov. 16

An exhibition featuring an eclectic gathering of visual and material culture objects from Gonzaga University's permanent collection opens November 16 at the Jundt Art Museum. The exhibition, titled 'What is Art? Visual and Material Culture in the Permanent Collection,' will remain in the Arcade Gallery through March 8, 2014.

The exhibition poses the open-ended question 'what is art?' for museum visitors. In a culture dominated by images, this small exhibition permits viewers to consider objects and juxtapositions of works of art in new and interesting ways. The exhibition includes an international array of prints, paintings, photographs, sculptures and decorative art by well-known artists such as Dale Chihuly, Albrecht Durer, William Hogarth, Rembrandt van Rijn and others, mixed with objects by unidentified, ethnic, contemporary or lesser-known artists.

The museum's exhibitions are free and open to the public Monday-Saturday, 10am-4pm. The museum is closed Sundays and University holidays.
