On Saturday, May 11, Spokane's youth will once again fill downtown with music and marching. The Junior Lilac Parade, itself in its 62nd year, will kick off the 75th Spokane Lilac Festival at 10 am.

The Junior Lilac Parade doubles as a competition among regional junior high and elementary school bands for the opportunity to march in the Armed Forces Torchlight Parade the following week. While drill and dance teams similarly compete, the participation of numerous children's organizations and clubs from throughout the Northwest makes it the largest children's parade in the nation. Local and county officials, as well as downtown businesses, join in the fun alongside Spokane's favorite mascots - Spike, Butch and Swoop.

Rotaract Club of Spokane, a Rotary-sponsored service club for young adults, is hosting and organizing the annual event. This year's theme is 'Swinging into Summer.' Parade entry forms can be completed online at www.spokanejrlilacparade.com/Home/entry until March 30. For more information and the parade route, please visit: www.spokanejrlilacparade.com.
