2012 Spokane Falls NW Indian Encampment and Pow Wow is this weekend




Just like the Canadian geese who stop at the river next to Riverfront Park every year, the Pow Wow is back at Riverfront Park, this Friday and Saturday, August 24 and 25. For the last 21 years, the annual event known as the Spokane Falls Northwest Indian Encampment and Pow Wow has been held in Riverfront Park. The Pow Wow's Grand Entry begins at 7 pm Friday night with sessions continuing at 1 pm and 7 pm on Saturday. The Pow Wow is free and open to all.

Other attractions are: Indian Art and Craft vendors; traditional Native food stands; traditional dancing and singing contests; and, non-profit and educational booths. The Annual Indian Community Fun Run for Health starts at 9:00 am Saturday at the Lilac Bowl. The Run is one or three miles, is free to participants, and offers T-shirts and prizes. Major sponsors include: the Spokane Tribe and STEP; City of Spokane Lodging and Tax Grant; the Kalispel Tribe and Northern Quest Casino; the NATIVE Project and NATIVE Health Clinic and Kauffman and Associates. Other individuals and small sponsors have also donated to make this event possible.

Alyse Black Trio Friday night at Chateau Rive at The Flour Mill

ZZ Top rocking Northern Quest Saturday night at 7




The iconic American band, ZZ Top, will rock the stage as part of the 2012 Pepsi Outdoor Summer Concert lineup at Northern Quest this Saturday, August 25. Showtime is at 7 pm. Best known for their chest-length beards, black leather outfits and trademark sunglasses, ZZ Top embodies the spirit of American blues rock. Formed in 1969 in Houston, Texas, ZZ Top became known to fans as 'that little ol' band from Texas.' With Billboard hits such as 'Cheap Sunglasses,' 'Sharp Dressed Man' and 'LaGrange,' ZZ Top has produced and released 14 records and sold more than 25 million albums in the United States. Their first two records reflected strong blues roots, while the third album, Tres Hombres, became their first Top-10 album. ZZ Top's eighth album, 'Eliminator,' featured two Top 40 singles, 'Gimme All Your Lovin' and 'Legs.' The album sold more than 10 million copies. ZZ Top's latest album was released in 2003, entitled 'Mescalero'; however, a new album has been recorded and is slated for a Fall 2012 release. ZZ Top has won three Video Music Awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.

All 2012 Pepsi Outdoor Summer Concerts are held on the Outdoor Stage at Northern Quest. This beautiful outdoor venue boasts more than 11,000 square feet of outdoor space which can hold more than 5,000 people and is complete with beverage and food vendors to accommodate guests. The final 2012 Pepsi Outdoor Summer Concert is Heart, on Sunday, September 9 at 5 pm.

This Friday's free concert in Manito Park

The Dwight Dash is this Saturday




The 2012 Dwight Dash is this Saturday, August 25 at 9 am at the Dwight Merkel Sports Complex, 5701 N. Assembly Street. This beginner level course offers a 5k which starts at 9 am, and a 10k which starts at 9:15. Runners will have the opportunity to enjoy the newly remodeled Dwight Merkel Sports Complex, along with enjoying the natural scenery of Riverside State Park. This unique urban trail run showcases the Dwight Merkel Sports Complex which boasts six full-size natural-grass soccer fields, two full-size synthetic-turf athletic fields, five softball diamonds, one youth baseball field, a skate park, along with a splash pad and playground. The Dwight Dash is a great event which offers challenges to all who participate.

Cost is $19 up until tonight until 11:59pm, $29 after that. Registration still available online at bit.ly/dwight_2012 for both the 5k and 10k runs.

You can check in at the registration table located under the shelter near the splash pad at the Dwight Merkel complex on Saturday, August 25, between 7:45am -8:30am (5k check-in will close at 8:30am, and 10k check-in will close at 9:00am).
